Disappearing circle illusion

(Instructions after the jump)
You see a circle of violet dots. Each of them disappears in order, like moving in a circle.
Concentrate your sight at the cross, and then you can see how the violet dots disappear.
If you do it right, you can see that the green dot is moving.
If you keep looking, all the violet dots will disappear and only green dot will keep moving!

I got this in an e-mail not to long ago but the green dot was moving and it isn’t on here…but it really does work. From what i understand the green dot is not even there…just goes to show you how our eyes play tricks on us.

I think I got a totally different result than was supposed to happen…I stared at the cross and the violet dots eventually disappeared, then green dots started flashing everywhere @_@

the green dot is not even on the picture when i moved away from the picture after staring at it for a while, i could see the green dot jumping around the whole screen…

Deni, you got precisely the result that was meant to happen! The reason why you see green dots after you’ve taken your eye off the violet dots is because they are opposing colours that the cones (colour receptors in your eye) respond to.. eg. if you stared at a black dot for ages and then looked away, you’d see a ghostly white dot hovering in your field of vision.
And the reason why those violet dots began to disappear after a while as you stared straight and still at the cross is because your eye/brain has adapted to non-responsive/continuous stimuli. notice how a few minutes after you spray on perfume, you can’t smell it anymore? thats coz your nose/brain is being constantly bombarded with the fragrance (stimuli)and has adapted to it. in everyday life, objects in our field of vision don’t disappear in that way because our eyes are constantly moving. but staring still and straight at the cross makes all the purple dots (stimuli) disappear because they are continuously there, and non-responsive!

i don’t see it the way it’s describrd. i see the dots disappear, but some of them come back.
