Balut eggs

A balut is a fertilized duck egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. They are considered delicacies of Asia and especially the Philippines, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Popularly believed to be an aphrodisiac and considered a high-protein, hearty snack, baluts are mostly sold by street vendors at night in the regions where they are available. They are often served accompanied with consumption of beer. The Filipino and Malay word balut(balot) roughly translates to mean “wrapped”.
Balut are most often eaten with a pinch of salt, though some balut-eaters prefer chili and vinegar to complement their egg. The eggs are savored for their balance of textures and flavors; the broth surrounding the embryo is sipped from the egg before the shell is peeled and the yolk and young chick inside can be eaten. All of the contents of the egg are consumed. In the Philippines, Balut have recently entered higher cuisine by being served as appetizers in restaurants: cooked adobo style, fried in omelettes or even used as filling in baked pastries.
Fertilized duck eggs are kept warm in the sun and stored in baskets to retain warmth. After nine days, the eggs are held to a light to reveal the zygote inside. Approximately eight days later the balut are ready to be cooked, sold, and eaten. Vendors sell cooked balut out of buckets of sand, used to retain warmth, and are accompanied by small packets of salt.

delicious! its just an egg the liquid tastes like soup. it looks terrible, but its just an egg, nothing added or removed.
it’s really good! and the ducks aren’t born yet so it’s just like eating an egg. after reading this article, i’ve got a hunger for some balot.. (by the way my parents are filipinos who’ve given me balot plenty of times while i was a kid and i liked it)
whatever happens, balut is yum yum!!
Hmm…..I think I’d like to try it. (I’m not a picky eater and like to try different dishes from around the world) Doesn’t look too good, but, like they say, u can’t judge a book by it’s cover, and I guess an egg by it’s look. What duz it taste like? Where can u get it?
you can get them at your local filipino store if you live in the US and yes its good and dont taste different from a boiled egg..
Had one for the first time, drank the juice, then stuffed that little duck chick in my greedy mouth,
tasted just like a boiled egg,
pity they don’t have them in the U.K.
My Favorite… i love balot, try it and I’ll bet you will crave for this after…
These are sooooo good. we ate these while on a recent trip to Viet Nam. Does anyone know where to get these in the Dc area
Don’t have any ducks. I’m gonna try this with chicken eggs; should work, I think. Probably not as strong a taste.
Will report back to here on results of chicken balot. Bill

MORE evidence that the Oriental is #$$%^%*&*(. The jury is still out on the cannibalism of aborted human fetuses.
